Why accessibility matters to me

As the parent of a child with a visual impairment, I understand first-hand how much it matters that online spaces work for everyone. That personal experience is at the heart of why I treat accessibility not as a box-ticking exercise, but as a core part of how I design and build websites.

Accessibility is also a legal requirement. As a service provider operating in the UK, I am committed to meeting my obligations under the Equality Act 2010, which requires that services are accessible to people with disabilities. This statement explains how I apply that commitment to my own website.

Compliance status

I aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standard on this website. This is the level expected by the UK Equality Act 2010 and the recognised benchmark for accessible web design.

I carry out regular accessibility checks to maintain and improve this standard. However, I acknowledge that no website is perfectly accessible at all times, and I am committed to addressing issues as they are identified.

Accessibility features of this website

The following features are in place on this website:

• High-contrast design is used as standard, designed to meet WCAG 2.1 AA colour contrast ratios
• The site is designed to respect browser and operating system contrast and text-size preferences where supported
• Keyboard navigation is supported throughout the site
• The site is designed to be usable on both desktop and mobile devices
• Regular accessibility audits are carried out to identify and address issues

Known limitations

While I strive to meet WCAG 2.1 AA, there may be areas of this website that do not yet fully meet that standard. I am actively working to identify and resolve these. If you encounter a specific issue, please contact me directly and I will prioritise it.

Accessibility in my web design services

Accessibility-first thinking is built into every project I take on. This includes:

• Advising clients on colour, contrast, typography, and layout choices that promote inclusivity without compromising on aesthetics
• Building websites that meet or work toward WCAG 2.1 AA compliance
• Designing for keyboard navigation and screen reader compatibility
• Considering both desktop and mobile accessibility throughout the design process

I will also be publishing blog content to help my clients understand accessibility and make informed decisions about their own websites.
